Beautiful Cartagena has become one of the most sought after vacation destinations over the past few years, mostly due to it’s gorgeous beaches and amazing coastlines. This Caribbean paradise is packed with a plethora of sand covered spots to relax, unwind and enjoy or maybe you’d rather tan or amp up to party mood while enjoying some of the best snorkeling and scuba adventures you’ll find anywhere in the world.
So as a traveller, you must ask yourself some important questions: Which beach (or beaches) are the right destination for this valuable-based vacation venue? More questions ensue, are you venturing out as a family, is this a romantic couple’s get-away or are you a single adventurer looking for a good time?
Here are the answers to these important queries that will help you to make up your mind about where you’ll land in this tropical paradise while you’re visiting Cartagena.
If you’re looking for a family friendly destination, look no further than the chain of islands just off the shores of Cartagena. Here you’ll find sandy beaches, colorful coral reefs that are great for swimming and snorkeling. Don’t forget to take the kids to the aquarium on Isla de San Martin and visitors recommend the shark feeding experience or visit the Aviary with hundreds of different species of birds.
Getting There: To reach the Islas del Rosario, take a boat from Cartagena, which you can either rent or join a day cruise and tour the bay on the way.
While you’ll find the majority of tourists at the Bocagrande beach just on the outskirts of Old Town Cartagena, but consider El Laguito on the opposite side of the peninsula instead. With calmer waters, you’ll find students, families with children and a younger, more bohemian type of crowd vacationing and visiting here.
Getting There: Travelling down the Centro on the Avenida San Martin, go south on Carrera 1 and you’ll be there in no time.
About four miles north of Cartagena, you’ll find a sleeping little fishing village called La Boquilla. On a peninsula that’s bordered by the sea and a mangrove swamp, you’ll find kitesurfers whisking across the waves or take a tour of the mangroves in a canoe.
Getting There: You can grab a taxi in Cartagena or catch the bus from India Catalina to travel north to La Boquilla.
You’ll find exactly what the name translates to on these sandy shores, plenty of white shorelines on the island of Baru. On these sunny shores, you can nap underneath the palm trees, sip cocktails on the beach or taste some of the native cuisine.
Getting There: Similar to Isla del Rosario, catch a tour boat or rent a vessel to this island about twelve miles southwest from the city of Cartagena.
Since this is one of the most popular beaches on the mainland, you’ll find plenty of other tourists and locals thanks to its convenient location. With skyscrapers and high rise hotels as a backdrop, this beach has a real Miami feel and plenty of sunshine for your afternoon outing.
Getting There: Heading north from the city, it’s just a ten minute walk from the Old Town section of Cartagena to reach the sunny shores.
