Cartagena, Colombia, even the name sounds so romantic and adventurous. This Brazilian gem and tropical adventureland has been called many things throughout history, from the Jewel of the Caribbean to the Walled City. What makes this teeming city so exciting and alluring is the many things it has to offer it’s visitors and travelers that come from all over the world to experience it’s unique beauty and old world charm.
Not visit would be complete without seeing the number one attraction, the Walled City of Cartagena itself and there’s several options available to travellers. There are walking tours for a small fee or for a unique experience, consider a nighttime horse and carriage ride that includes dinner. There’s also bus tours available that will take you all around the city.
Visit A Castle
If you enjoyed the Walled City, you’re really going to want to visit the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas named after the Spanish King Philip IV. Originally built in the 1600’s, it has been revamped several times to become one of the greatest fortresses ever constructed. Prepare yourself for a hike up some stairs as it takes about fifteen minutes to reach the top.
Convent of the Stern
Speaking of the top, if you want one of the best views in the city, be sure and visit the
Convento La Popa de la Galera which sits on the highest hill in Cartagena. It’s name translates into the convent of the stern as it’s said the hill resembles the back end of a ship. Outside of the chapel is a beautiful garden patio full of flowers. There is also an eerie statue of a speared Padre Alonso García de Paredes, a priest who was murdered along with five Spanish soldiers for trying to spread the gospel.
See The Gems
The Jewel of the Caribbean is home to Joyeria Caribe Museum and Factory where tourists can see how emeralds are mined and eventually made into jewelry. There’s no cost for admission with a guided tour and ends in their jewelry store where you may want to bring home a shiny, souvenir from your trip.
Hit The Plaza
If shopping is on your list of things to do in Cartagena, make sure to stop by the Plaza de San Diego. There’s also a number of fabulous restaurants here and the crowds really pick up for those wanting to enjoy the nightlife. If you’re looking for a quieter adventure, try the early morning hours when it’s not as crowded.
Artistic Marketplace
At Las Bovedas (or the vault) you’ll find dozens of local artisans and crafters with hundreds of their wares up for sale. There’s also tons of traditional souvenirs available, restaurants and galleries inside the stunning architecture of these ancient vaulted alcoves. Originally built as a seawall back in the late 1700’s, at first is stored provisions and was later retrofitted as a cramped prison.
While these have all been places to visit inside the city, Cartagena is also world-renowned for its scuba diving scene and snorkeling venues. Many of these underwater hot spots are located near the archipelago island chain of Islas del Rosario about 37 kilometers from the city. Even if you’re not a diver, you might want to check out the beautiful Cartagena bay and take a dip in the wonderful Caribbean waters during your visit to this gorgeous city.
